Scalp micropigmentation is a non-surgical treatment for hair loss, in which natural pigments are added to the epidermal layer of the scalp. The pigmentation replicates the appearance of real hair follicles, giving the appearance of a natural, shaved head. Essentially, it is a form of scalp tattoo that camouflages loss of hair and restores the appearance of a hairline. As we will see, scalp micropigmentation or SMP hair tattoo is a cost-effective and hassle-free option for any gender, compared to other hair loss solutions.
Scalp micropigmentation is performed with an electric tattoo device; a machine-powered needle that applies the pigment directly to the scalp. The pigment application is carried out in sessions which typically last between 4 and 5 hours, and which practitioners advise should be scheduled at intervals of a few weeks at a time. The number of treatments required varies according your needs. For a small area of hair loss, such as a bald patch, a minimum of 3 to 4 treatments is recommended in order for the scalp to fully retain the colour of the pigmentation; for larger areas, more treatments will be necessary.
During the process, the scalp is numbed with a topical cream applied by the SMP Hair Tattoo specialist in order to reduce the pain that may be associated with the treatment. People undergoing the treatment should still be advised that, even with the numbing cream, a level of discomfort is to be expected. The amount of pain you experience depends on your pain threshold, but the process is not especially invasive and so it will be manageable. Additionally, if you have skin sensitivities or acne, you should not undergo the treatment during a breakout.
Requirements for aftercare are straightforward – here are a few things to bear in mind. The most important point to remember is to avoid wetting your scalp and exposing your scalp to sunlight, for 4 days after each session of the pigmentation. After 4 days of avoiding the sun, it is best to limit exposure to 1 hour per day for regular skin, or up to forty-five minutes if you are particularly fair-skinned. Sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 is recommended even after the fourth day following treatment, and moisturiser should be applied to the area after this day too.
As with any procedure, there are some small risks to consider. The ingredients in the pigment may cause allergic reactions, so you should double-check with your SMP hair practitioner to make sure you won’t have to deal with this, or to work out a way to manage a minor reaction. The process used to apply the pigment used may also cause minor infection, but this can be avoided by following the aftercare guidelines and, of course, general hygiene. The most important risk factor to be aware of is that practitioners of scalp micropigmentation are not legally required to undergo formal training, and so if you are looking to receive the treatment, you should take care to ensure that your practitioner has the following:
Treatments generally cost between $400 and $1,000 in the US, and between £1,800 and £3,000 in the UK. You should be aware that the effects of the completed schedule of treatments can be expected to last up to 8 years, or less if especially dry skin is a factor. This is because the skin continuously naturally exfoliates itself, reducing the effects of the process over this timeframe.
Generally speaking, anybody who has suffered any degree of hair loss will benefit from scalp micropigmentation. This can be anything from a receding hair line, to a bald patch, to complete hair loss. It can be particularly useful in restoring the appearance and confidence of people who have suffered from cancer, alopecia, or male and female pattern baldness. As an added bonus for people who might have previously tried a hair transplant that encountered complications, micropigmentation can be used to cover up any scarring, rejuvenating both your hairline and your self-esteem.
There are numerous advantages to scalp micropigmentation when compared to other hair loss treatments. Let’s take hair transplants as an example.
Hair transplant procedures can cost between $4,000 and $15,000 in the US, and up to £30,000 in the UK. Not only is this significantly more expensive than pigmentation, it also carries a greater inherent risk, as the transplants are far more invasive and therefore open to undesirable complications, including the scarring mentioned previously. The simplicity of the pigmentation process makes it far safer than a transplant; while allergies and minor infection are factors to be considered, the likelihood of an individual encountering such issues is less than it is in more intensive procedures like transplants.
There are also no surgical dressings or stitches to worry about, which makes the healing process quicker and less fretful. And after its healed, there is virtually no need for maintenance other than normal care for a naturally shaved head – washing, sunscreen, and maybe a lick of wax.
So, there you have it. No matter your gender and whatever your reason for seeking solutions to your hair loss, scalp micropigmentation might be the best bet for your needs, whether you want to cover a bald patch, get your hairline back on track, or rebuild your look and confidence. When it comes to restoring your hair and your self-esteem, it is cheaper, safer, simpler, and most importantly, more effective than alternative surgical solutions.
